A Man's Guide to "African" Prints feat. Laurence Chauvin Buthaud

Laurence Chauvin Buthaud is a designer behind LaurenceAirline, a sophisticated menswear label from Côte d'Ivoire and France. According to an interview in The Business of Fashion, she first started her collection in womenswear, but decided to focus on menswear after some serendipitous work with the Nigerian male musician Keziah Jones. Her modern and edgy clothes are all made in Côte d'Ivoire with sustainable and ethical manufacturing processes, and she's known for her use of African graphic prints.

Here's what we can learn from her collection.

Unique prints can enhance the sharpness of well-tailored menswear. The magic of prints makes simple clothes look even more flattering.

At Maki & Mpho, we believe that men should try wearing more prints. But the question is: how can you make prints work for you?

Our friend, Askmen.com, has some suggestions from a Soho-based menswear shop owner, Brian Trunzo. If you are a beginner with prints, you can start with accessories such as ties, pocket squares, scarves, and bags. Brian also suggests that you start with small-scale patterns so prints are not so obvious from the distance. (We think that you should still brag about the detailed designs to your friends!!)

And here are a couple of suggestions from Maki & Mpho.

Pick unique prints. Don’t simply pick plaids or dots. If you are wearing something with an unusual print, people will definitely come talk to you. It’s going to be a great conversation starter.

Be picky about the quality of the fabric. Prints on cheap-looking fabric can make you look immature. Prints on a high quality fabric will make you look dapper, chic, sophisticated, edgy, and smart.

Don't be afraid of wearing prints! Prints make you unique. Prints make you standout. Prints make you look good.

Wondering where you can get such nice prints? No worries. We've got you covered. At Maki & Mpho, you can shop quality men’s fashion accessories with original textile prints!

Be the first one (and the brave one) to try our prints! Be the best dressed man!
